Geocaching on the Broads
What is Geocaching?
More than 2.5 million caches are hidden worldwide and more than six million people are looking for them. Most are containers of various sizes including a piece of paper that you write your username and date on and put it back. That’s it – the fun of the chase.
How do I get involved?
You need a GPS-enabled device – most people use a smartphone and download a geocaching app. Introductory apps are free but I paid a one-off £6.99 for my Groundspeak Inc. version which has more features.
What next?
Open the app and search an area to locate the caches. You navigate via a map or compass direction. Most caches give you a description, a clue and past finders’ logged messages.
What happens if these is no internet access?
That’s a problem in Norfolk. Search when you have wifi and save them to an offline list which you can then open anywhere.
How do the caches get there?
Geocachers hide them in locations important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. They are hidden unless you know what you are looking for.
Why do I do it?
It’s a great excuse for a walk or a cycle ride – many are set up along circular walks in the Broads area. You also end up visiting places you would never go to otherwise. Some caches even give you a potted history of the site which adds to the fun and interest.
