Navigation of Bridges

Bridge Heights and Opening are listed on the Broads Authority website which you can access using this link http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/bridge-heights-and-opening-times

Please follow these instructions when approaching every bridge:

1. Slow down!

2. Check bridge height clearance of your boat and always ensure you have enough space between sides and roof of bridge to pass through with ease. A marker gauge on either side of the bridge will indicate the height clearance of the bridge.

3. Approach every bridge with canopy and screen lowered.

4. Ensure that loose equipment is removed from cabin tops and remove tv aerial and store inside the boat.

5. No persons are allowed on cabin tops or decks whilst passing under bridge.

6. If you have any problems or are unsure of any procedures, please telephone your boatyard.

Navigating Low Bridges on the Norfolk Broads

Some bridges, Wroxham, Beccles, and Wayford have low clearance, meaning certain cruisers cannot pass under them at any time. If this applies to your boat, it will be clearly noted in the boat description, and a reminder will also be displayed onboard.

Water levels and tidal conditions can sometimes make bridges impassable for all cruisers. However, this won’t stop you from enjoying these destinations! Convenient moorings are available nearby, and you’re welcome to moor free of charge at any local boatyard, allowing you to explore the area on foot.

For some boats, passing under certain bridges may require lowering the canopy and screens. Please keep in mind that this will expose parts of the interior to the weather.

Important Bridge Safety Notices for Wroxham and Potter Heigham

Wroxham Bridge:

For safe passage under Wroxham Bridge, all hire boat guests must use our exclusive pilotage service. This service is mandatory and must be prebooked by contacting us on 07535 673 170. Our expert team will ensure your safe passage under the bridge. Due to height restrictions and tidal waters, attempting passage without our pilotage service is strictly prohibited and may result in serious damage or injury. Compliance with this requirement is a mandatory part of your hire agreement.

Please note that the Bridge Pilot Service will be operational from late March and that the final decision to pass under Wroxham Bridge rests solely with our expert team, who will assess prevailing conditions to ensure the utmost safety for all.

Potter Heigham Bridge:

For your safety, and the safety of others, it is strictly prohibited to attempt passage under Potter Heigham Bridge due to height restrictions and tidal waters, and doing so may result in serious damage or injury. Compliance with this requirement is a mandatory part of your hire agreement.
