The Bure Valley Railway picks up in either Aylsham or Wroxham. As Coltishall is the limit of navigation for motorised cruisers, if you want to experience the railway you will need to visit the Wroxham station, which is 4 ¼ hours’ cruise from our marina in Stalham.
Bure Valley Railway
With over 100,000 visitors a year, this is a popular attraction within Norfolk and operates on a not-for-profit basis. The railway is run by husband and wife, Andrew and Susan.
Built on the track bed of what used to be the Great Eastern Railway, running between Wroxham and Aylsham, the line was originally opened in 1880, running until 1952 for passenger use and freight carrying until 1982 when the line was formally closed by British Rail.
There is a 9-mile footpath alongside the track, which was put in place before the track re-opened as Bure Valley Railway in 1990.
The line runs between Aylsham and Wroxham, with several stops along the way including Brampton, Buxton, and Coltishall, so you can stop off along the way and explore.
You can also enjoy a Broads cruise with a combined train and Broads cruise ticket. The cruise is on a comfortable tour boat and includes a commentary on the outward journey.
There is also the Whistlestop Café at Aylsham if you want a bite to eat, and the café also provides children’s portions if you need them.
