For Those Interested in… History
Norwich has two stand-out pieces of history within the ruins of its city walls – the 900-year-old Norman Norwich Castle and Cathedral. Less than 10 minutes from one another, these historic Norman buildings are certainly worth a look when visiting the city. Norwich Castle houses fine art, archaeology gems and natural history exhibits all within its historic castle walls. The kids will love exploring the castle keep, its dungeons and battlements, with there’s plenty to keep their young minds entertained as well as interesting for the adults.
Norwich Cathedral is, first and foremost, a place of worship, but those of all faiths and religions are welcome within this stunning structure. With one of the tallest spires in England, coming only second to Salisbury Cathedral, Norwich Cathedral is a sight to behold and an iconic part of the city’s skyline. Other buildings of historical interest include Cow Tower, on Norwich’s riverside walk.
Norwich is also home to a variety of museums, from Strangers’ Hall to the Museum of Norwich to the John Jarrold Printing Museum, there’s plenty for those interested in the history of this beautiful city. There are plenty of historical spots to visit around Norwich, as well, including Elm Hill, Norwich’s most famous and beautiful medieval street, or Jarrold, the flagship shop which has been in Norwich since 1823 and stood in London Street since 1840.
For Those Interested in… Shopping
When you think of leisure, you may think of shopping, and Norwich is no different. Leisure in Norwich in no exception, with 2 shopping centres, one of the oldest open-air markets in country as well as a number of independent retailers in the city’s Lanes.
The city’s newest shopping centre, Chantry Place, sits on the site of an old chocolate factory. The shopping centre is home to a number of high-street retailers, including Superdrug, Boots, Build-a-Bear, H&M, House of Fraser, Apple and much, much more! The centre also features a food court with a McDonald’s, KFC, SpudULike, Pizza Hut, and Ed’s Easy Diner – a great spot to grab a bit of lunch. Outside there is also a Wagamama, Gourmet Burger Kitchen amongst others.
Castle Quarter is located next door to the city’s historic castle and has been a part of Norwich city life since the early ‘90s. With a variety of pound shops, as well as Canaries, an official shop for Norwich City Football Club and a number of high street retailers including Boots, New Look, Peacocks and much more. The Castle Quarter Mall is also home to some independent retailers such as Gifted, who sell a variety of gift and pop culture items.
Norwich Market is also great when considering leisure in Norwich, as it has a variety of food, craft, services and much, much more. As one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in the country, its 189 stalls in the heart of the city are well worth a browse, even if you’re not looking for anything.
Norwich Lanes is made up of different alleyways, courtyards and open spaces just outside of the main city centre. Featuring medieval architecture, this mainly-pedestrian area has a wide range of shopping opportunities for everyone, with over 300 independent retailers, cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. The Lanes also house Cinema City, and independent cinema as well as a few galleries, museums, a community theatre and music venues.
For Those Interested in… Entertainment
With 4 theatres, 4 cinemas, and a bowling alley, Norwich is also a fantastic spot for entertainment. Leisure in Norwich wouldn’t be complete without a rich variety of entertainment, and the city doesn’t disappoint.
Norwich’s Riverside Entertainment complex is great for everyone, from a J.D. Wetherspoons to Hollywood Bowl, Odeon Cinema to some fantastic restaurants, this is bound to please most.
Norwich’s Castle Quarter Mall is home to a Vue cinema, and not too far from Chantry Place is the Norwich Theatre Royal which hosts a variety of live performances throughout the year.
Norwich Puppet Theatre is located within a converted medieval church and is one of only 3 puppet theatres in England. Having been in the business of puppets for over 30 years, the Puppet Theature produces new shows for families and children which debut in Norwich and then travel the UK and the rest of the world.
