Often referred to as the ‘capital of Norfolk’, Norwich sits on the River Wensum and is the furthest West you can go on this stretch of river. Being a city, you may be put off bringing the dog here, but that would be a mistake. The city has many great options for families and couples with dogs, including the Plasterer’s Arms on Cowgate, with 15 cask taps featuring real ale and cider, 9 keg lines for craft lager and ale, and a constantly-shifting line up, this is perfect for those who love ale and cider and trying something new. Dogs and kids are both welcome, so whether you have one or the other or both, this is a great option when taking the dog to the Norfolk Broads. Just a 20-minute walk from the yacht station, you can take the leisurely riverside walk along the River Yare and see the part of the river that hire craft are not allowed to, as well as the historic Cow Tower.
Whitlingham Country Park and Mousehold Heath are great options for exercising the pooch. Mousehold Heath is a half hour’s walk from the Norwich Yacht Station and very popular with dog owners. The area has 184 acres of heathland, woodland, and recreational open land for the dog to explore, and throughout the year various events are held on Mousehold. Whitlingham Country Park is on the outskirts of the city, and perhaps requires you to moor up nearby on your way in or out of the city. There are a handful of Broads Authority moorings nearby if this takes your interest. Another favourite with dog owners, Whitlingham Country Park has a large lake in the middle, perfect for talking a long stroll around with the dog, and on a nice day the atmosphere is alive with other dog walkers and families, and you can grab a bite to eat at the visitor’s centre and sit outside on the terrace with the dog.
